Small Town Festival Attracts More Than Local Attention

“Oy with the poodles already!”

Washington Depot, CT— Why care about a small festival in a tiny town in Connecticut? Two words. “Gilmore Girls.” Washington Depot, CT is famously known as the town that the creator of the television series “Gilmore Girls,” Amy Sherman-Palladino, visited before creating the fictional town of Stars Hollow. Every year, fans of the show travel to the quaint town to explore all their favorite spots.

On Oct. 9, Stars Hollow, sorry Washington Depot, held its annual Harvest Festival: a storyline straight out of the “Gilmore Girls” playbook.

“Next fire truck ride!” a man yells. The spinning image of the beloved town oddball who has had every job, Kirk. Children running through hay bales, sales booths of every kind, food trucks, live music, and beautiful brightly colored foliage; it is almost surreal to be transported to a 2022 version of Stars Hollow.

The clothes are modern and people have cell phones so the early 2000s nostalgia of the show is almost erased. But their scarecrow-building contest immediately transports fans back to an episode in season two where the town has a snowman-building contest.

Fans must be warned though that “Gilmore Girls” fails to convey how unwalkable Washington Depot truly is. In Stars Hollow, the show often has scenes of the characters walking through town easily with transportation not being an important issue.

In real life, however, have fun walking uphill on the side of the road. There are no cab companies that come to the town nor are there any uber drivers around for almost 15 miles. So for those who plan to travel to town by train or simply do not have a car, begging townspeople for rides will be a necessity.

But for die-hard fans, making a trip to Washington Depot, CT is definitely worth the hype. The townspeople greet everyone with a smile and autumn in Connecticut is a sight worth seeing. Just make sure to have a car.
